Thinking Thanks

November 28th, 2009 § 44 comments

It’s been more than two months since my last post.

In the last several weeks I have received numerous e-mails of concern, support, inquiry, and general contact.  I have to say that I am overwhelmed by the number of people who give a shit about my well-being, and even more amazed by the number who have stuck with the blog in my absence.

I now understand why the word “thanks” has similar roots as the word “think.”  It’s because we express thanks for one’s thoughtfulness.

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, I thought this is the perfect time to express my Thanks and gratitude to all of you for writing, continuing to visit the blog, and keeping me, Granny, and The Attorney in your thoughts, prayers, and RSS  feeds and Google readers.

I wish I had some monumental epic story to excuse the cobwebs and chirping crickets that seem to have taken over here West of Mayberry, but the truth is that sometimes life’s currents overtake you and sweep you under.1  You go missing for a bit,  but if you keep your wits, hold your breath, and stay calm, usually you’ll pop back up again…although a few yards further down the river.

So, here I am, popping up a little further down the river, a bit water-logged and a touch worn-out, but ultimately none the worse for wear.

I’ve never been one to burden others with my woes and sorrows.  And I’m not going to start now.  Folks have enough of their own without having to take my on, too.  But I do want to let you all know that despite some rough patches and stress, I’m okay.

I’m okay. Granny is okay.  The Attorney is okay.  We’re not perfect, but we’re okay.

Even if we weren’t, I would have made it back here eventually.  If for no reason other than to close the shutters and sweep up for one last time.  I would never just cut out without saying thank you and goodbye.

But, I’m not saying goodbye.  Just thank you.

For all you have given me.

‘Tis we who thank you. Many times over.

Thanks for “popping up again”. Keeping good thoughts here for you.

I came to New Orleans to celebrate turning fifty. So hello from NOLA. NOLA is okay. Not as awesome as I thought it would be and turning fifty is just another day in the life of a man who feels thirteen most days. Just wanted to let you know that hearing that you are okay, and granny is okay, now that makes my birthday. Oh and by the way I’m still waiting for the collection of your favorite postings to go on sale somewhere.

  • Johnny says:

Hi Tony, I’m glad to hear your words again. I know that life has been throwing you a few curve balls, but I am glad that you, granny and the attorney are doing ok. I will continue to keep a good thought for all of you and look forward, to when you can once again grace us with your words. God bless you.

    Johnny

  • Will says:

Very good to see you back and to hear that all is well. I’ve been blogging for five and a half years now, and have been reading blogs, principally blogs by gay men, for six or more years. Blogs are a powerfully intimate medium. The sense of knowing the blogger, learning his world and coming to care about him and his life is very strong.

When blogs close up shop officially or the blogger just drifts away and months turn into years, there’s the sense of a friend or at least a good acquaintance lost. So, I and others check in here regularly because you’ve taken us into your confidence and we’re honored to have that happen. And we’ve discovered you’re a great guy we care about. You come and go as you need to. I and most of us, I suspect, will be here to greet you all over again each time.

  • Well glad to know that everything is alright :) I’d have to second what Will said. I’m definitely going to be here each time and probably then some.

  • A. Lewis says:

A bit further down river. I like that. A lot. And what do you mean you’re surprised that we missed you? Of course we did! Very glad to know you’re still breathing and happy. Me too. Giant Thanksgiving hugs to one of my favorites.

  • HB says:

Hey bud, glad to see that you’re still around :)

  • Kirby says:

Delighted to meet you further down. As always, I remain yours.

  • Tom says:

yeah, well, everyone else pretty much said it all. we do get attached to our bloggers, don’t we? welcome back, for however long.

  • David says:

Hey hey! Glad you stopped by. Glad all is ‘okay’. I looked at my computer: “is that a new entry??” I’m sure blogging is like shrimp scampi. I love shrimp scampi but I haven’t had it in over a year. You were only away for two months. Perhaps I’ll make some shrimp scampi in honor of your return.

  • Harland says:

So happy to hear from–glad you and yours are all ok. When you write a blog, I’ll be here.

  • Richard says:

Glad all is well with you, Granny and the attorney. We’re all here for you just like you, through your words, in your own special way, have been here for us. My mother always said “what’s worth having is worth waiting for” and you’re words and thoughts are definately worth the wait.

  • Mark says:

So good to hear something out of you. Actually a sigh of relief. Do what you have to, we will wait.

  • Sometimes we all need a little time off, I know I do. You are entitled too it, we just miss you when your away. Glad to hear all of you are ok.

  • Rick says:

No need to apologize for not writing. We all “pop up” and go back under from time to time. I used to write in my blog everyday, consistently. As time goes by it is now an occasional thing, which is fine.

I’m sorry to hear things are just “okay”. I wish they were better for you. Just know one day soon they will be. Time heals everything.

  • Doug says:

Yes my dear blog friend there are a lot
“of people who give a shit about my (your) well-being”.

Glad to hear there is something in your life to be thankful for and that you returned here to give thanks.

I too wish things were better than “okay” and believe that someday they will be.

    Hang in there!

  • California Alex says:

    Perfection is overrated.

  • Blobby says:

I feel better knowing that you’re living and breathing – and once in a while, writing.

…and if some of us want to take on your potential sorrows and woes, even though we have our own, that’s not such a bad thing. It’s called friendship.

  • john says:

It was worth the wait. Glad to hear that things are OK

  • jimmy says:

    Glad you’re OK.

  • royster says:

VERY good to hear from you….and what your mention of “not perfect” made me think of…

  • royster says:

oh yeah, and hope the the river didn’t leave you too water-blogged. Of your log too watered-down (though i doubt that is possible). And did i miss the why and wherefore of that “Final 1″ website?

  • Kerry in Phoenix says:

Glad to know you are OK.

  • irisgirl says:

WELCOME BACK!!!!! I join the well-expressed sentiments of your other blog friends. It’s just good to hear from you again, Tony, and to learn that you and Granny and the Attorney are ok.

But you’re wrong if you think that sharing your struggles and woes is a burden to us. We’d be honored to listen and give you our support and comfort about anything you’d want to discuss, when and if you are ready.

Maybe it would be a way of saying “thanks” back to you, for all you have given us!

Sending you and Granny and the Attorney big hugs and best wishes for the upcoming holidays!

  • Brenton says:

It’s nice to know you are all ok. No one is perfect, sometimes we are a little battered and bruised and need time to lick our wounds.
    Welcome back.

  • Frank says:

Welcome back. A lot has transpired here on the blogosphere in your absence. It is a community of sorts and when a member goes missing, well, you were missed.

  • Greg says:

Greetings of the season to you.

  • Gregg says:

Good news, my friend. Oh, and “THANKS” right back at ya!

  • charley says:

your words remind me of tubing along the Ichetucknee long ago. thankfully you’ve emerged further down river long enough to let those who do care about your well being know that you, Granny and the attorney are ok! that’s damn good news, thanks Tony!

happiest of holidays to Tony, At-Tony, and Granny. From Palm Springs CA, followed by NYC, followed by Vegas…but i’d still rather be in TN.

  • royster says:

it is indeed a holy day when i get to read some more of your writing. Thanks. And really glad to hear that Granny still has that sense of humor….and, oddly, that dating a Republican is not my cross alone to bear.
